This past week was really hard for me. I have been running really low on restful sleep, and I have been busy working on miserable amounts of homework. Right now, the worst is Engineering 131. Last week I had to stay up until 1 a.m. at Harrison working with my team on our Milestone 3 the night before it was due. And it was not like we had really procrastinated; we had already met twice that week. We spent both of those meetings revising parts of our first two milestones so we could actually start our third and get a good grade on it. So that night I got less than 5 hours of sleep, because I did not get to bed until after 2 and I had to get up at 7. This weekend has not been much better for me because I have had to spend most of my time working on my community project for English. The reason I appear to have put it off until the last minute is because of Engineering 131. Yes, all blame can be traced back to Engineering 131, however, I will admit I am partially to blame because, looking back; there were times when I had free time and selfishly used it as such. So, I have only gotten about 6 hours of sleep both Friday and Saturday nights, and I am starting to get a headache from the lack of sleep and from sitting in front of my laptop all day. I cannot wait until Thanksgiving break, when I can actually get some sleep. This upcoming week I have to complete my CCCD assignment, Milestone 4, Homework 11, and study for a test, and that is just from Engineering 131! I fear what next semester is going to be like. I am sure next semester will make this one seem like a cake walk.

I Strongly Dislike ENGR 131

I think most people have the same feeling with you. We wanted to go to the concert hold on Sunday at first, but neither I nor my partner knows where the Long center is. We had to take part in the event hold on Tuesday. Although the event was interesting, I didn’t enjoy it because I had economy exam at 8:00pm and the event won’t end until 7:30p.m. On Thursday, we spent almost 4 hours on milestone 3. My teammates said the ENGR 131 class made them didn’t want to be engineers any more. I think the class on last Friday is the most interesting engineering class we ever had. I enjoyed the time we built the bridge as long as possible and felt disappoint when we got the fifth place. If the engineering class can have more practice activities, the class will be more attractive.(ENGL 106)
ReplyDeleteSlim, I too feel like I end up blaming every bad happening in my life at ENGR 131. You cannot really call it a “difficult” class because it does not really present you with questions that require extraordinary analytical abilities to crack the code and obtain an answer but at the same time, it weeds you out because of the effort you are required to put into the course. At the end of the day, it leaves you wondering why there are only 2 credits attached with this monstrous course. Right from the homework, to the Milestone projects, and down to the worst of all- MEA; Engineering 131 really does test more than just intelligence. As a matter of fact, I feel like my patience is being tested in this course. There have been times when I have cracked under the pressure of Engineering 131 and actually re-considered my decision to become an engineer. But then again, I guess this course is what keeps our world from having a surplus of engineers! ENGL 106
ReplyDeleteThis is like the view every single person has about ENGR 131. For a 2 credit hour course, everyone finds it a little too much. Sometimes i feel the assignments are designed to frustrate us and even though i know how design processes are important for engineers, i find it a bit overrated in that class. Some aspects of homework,MEA and even the semester design project really confuse me and all the professor gives as aid is - " Improve your process, make it an engineering solution". I find that frustrating and irritating. The classes seem pointless as most of the learning we do is through homework and assignments, making the 2 credit hour class redundant. I think this class should have 4 credit hours or atleasy should be optional to students.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t really mind the work we had to do in Engr 131 at first, but now it just feels like we have way too much homework for a class that is only two credit hours. I really do not like how we were given the design project because they didn’t really give us any specific things to focus on. The project itself seems too broad and the milestones take quite a while to complete. I liked Engr 131 at the beginning of the semester when the homework wasn’t too difficult, and I really liked when the various engineering colleges came in to talk during class. I feel like the course should have us do more hands on things (on a smaller scale of course) that the different engineering college students would do, or at least present us with details to what an everyday job would be like for the various engineering disciplines. (ENGL 106)
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure there is no one who actually enjoys going to ENGR 131. It is a 4 hour/week course, but it is only counted as a 2 credit hour course. Apparently those other 2 hours spent in ENGR 131 can't be counted. I think the one thing is really frustrating is that EVERYTHING is due within a 7 day span. We had the final milestone and CCCD project due on the day where we had a team practical exam. Then, next week we have an individual practical exam. It is too much for such a short time span.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for the professors who teach it. They view it as a very important course, which in some regards it is, but the information and how it is set up is so bad that every student who goes through the course feels opposite. (ENGL 106)
