Today we talked about bringing technology to a poor a relatively undeveloped country. Here is my plan on what would be a good way to go about that.
1) Build one small building in a town that serves as the technological hub for that town/ region.
2) The caretakers of the building should try and engage the local community in liking the new technology.
3) Provide ways for those people who like the new technology to acquire some of there on.
4) Ounce most of the community starts to begin using the new technology the technology hub can become more of a community center.
This idea is a slow idea. It would be something of a 5 to 15 year plan. It would be more focus on engaging the locals instead of trying to force it on them. It would try to focus more on the younger age groups because they are generally more flexible when it comes to technology. This would take a while but would generally cost very low. The building itself would be the most class. It would not have to be to modern, but would need to include new technology. I also think it would be a good idea for it to serve as a community center as well. The biggest part would be the directors who take care of the new technology hubs. They would have to be nice and chatty enough to engage the local community while still being business and technological savvy enough to run the center.
This is an excellent idea to try and introduce things slowly and allow the people of the community to decide if they want to use the technology or not. The only problem with it that I can think of is that many of these communities have no need for many of the technologies that would be introduced. For many of them they do things the way that they have always done them and couldn't concieve what use the technology would be to them . There would also have to be some sort of economic growth involving the use of these technologies that would incorporate them into the community while helping to better the lives of the people in the community. There would also be reprecussions from this introduction, since it would be changing the basic structure of the community and the peoples' day to day lives. This needs to be taken into account when deciding on whether or not to intriduce technology and which technologies to introduce. engr 103
ReplyDeleteIn Latin America, the implementation of technology is often challenged by the sporadic occupation of settlements which are often separated by great distances from the next nearest town or village. I like your idea of building a small building in every town/village which would serve as the hub of its technology, thereby reducing dependence from external sources.
ReplyDeleteThe idea is a good one too as there would then be something to centre the rural community around. This would serve to increase communication and cooperation among the members of that particular community. It would also not need to be very costly to build and maintain.

This is a very interesting solution you have here. Your idea has a very good rationale behind it: getting people more accustomed to technology over a long time period. I like it. However, I’m still wondering how you might be able to find a local director who will guarantee the upkeep and sustainability of your center. In my opinion making the community center some sort of learning centre in which the youth can learn and be able to slowly realise the benefits of technology in their community, is the way to go in some sense.
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand, you give the community the incentive to go to your community center. The center will act as Hub like you said, and will be definitely used by the local especially the youth to enrich themselves with knowledge.
On the hand, your community/learning center, will definitely be maintained since it is going to definitely be used.
