Scared of Winters?
As my screen name suggests, before coming to Purdue, I was truly afraid of facing the winters that head towards West Lafayette on a yearly basis. Now I know it is far too early to state an opinion but I do not think that the cold isn’t un-bearable. In spite of the fact that I have either a 7:30 or an 8:30 class everyday of the week, I feel like with proper winter clothing, you could actually walk through the winters with ease. My biggest worry was waking up. It tends to be extremely difficult to get out of your warm and cozy blanket when your surroundings and exteriors are so cold. However, because of having the luxuries of an indoor heating system and an alarm clock with a snooze option, I got my way around that problem as well. Although, I have to admit that I had some luck on my side too! All my classes on the first day of snow were somehow, magically cancelled for one reason or another. Hence I had the liberty of cuddling up under my blanket and sip on some hot French Vanilla Mocha while the others we forced to bear the cold and walk to all their classes. If I got bored, I would just stand near my window and observe little humans (Keep in mind that I live on the eighth floor, hence everything and everyone seems little) being all bundled up and ready to face the winter! What took me by shock was how often people tend to fall or slip when it snows. A good 7 to 8 people tripped in half an hour. Even though I laughed as they fell, I felt extremely sorry for them as Finals were soon approaching and it sucks to give an exam with a broken arm or leg. Moreover, deep inside, I knew I was next! I hope it doesn’t get too bad in the coming few days so we have a smooth finals week. It would be awful if we had to make our way through piles of snow in order to get to our exams!

The same with you, before I coming to Purdue, I was shocked when many friends told me it is freezing here in winter and sometimes we have to stay in the dorms for several days because of the blizzard. Now I think the winter here is much better than I thought. It is even warmer than the winter of my hometown. I had team meeting for ENGR 131 on the snowy day. The snow was melting and there are ice water on the road. I hated that. The worse thing is I have class at 7:30a.m next day. I tried my best to left my warm bed. I don't want to have class at 7:30a.m anymore. It's too cold in the winter and it is totally dark outside. I hope we have a smooth finals week. It's awesome we can have a long break after the exams. ReplyDeleteI was also very afraid of how cold it would get here because I am from an area that has constant warm temperatures all year round. So far, there have been many days (and especially morning) that I would consider pretty cold compared to what I am used to. I have also heard that the temperature now is not even near to how cold it can and probably will get later on this year and at the start of next year. People have told me that when we get back from winter break and start the new semester, snow will be a common sight and the temperatures will drop dramatically. All I know is that I will probably have to wear layers of clothes and wear a lot of clothes that I am not used to wearing, just to deal with the weather. I think many people will be buying more winter clothing during winter break in order to prepare for the extreme temperatures that are coming. (ENGL 106)
ReplyDeleteI can and will not be scared of winter! Winter is an amazing time of the year. It feels weird when it is really dark but only 6:30pm. It feels weird when I get up in the morning and it is still dark. It is weird when every where I look is covered in white. All these things are weird but so awesome at the exact same time. If I wear my big coat, it really is not that cold outside. Winter is nothing to be scared of even though it is a lot rougher than nice relaxing weather in California or somewhere like that. Winter is also nice because of the things that come along with it. It is a time when the family is able to spend time together. This is something I always took for granted before I had to move out of my families house. I can not wait till exams are over, and hopefully I do well on them, and I am back at home relaxing. This year I actually get to get out of the cold and go to hawaii for 10 days. It is going to be amazing relaxing on the beach with my family and swimming in the ocean. I have never actually done this during the winter break time, and I am so excited to finally be able to. (engl 106)
